RAVENNA

Ravenna, an ancient town famous for its mosaics is easily reachable by bus. It can be toured on foot or by bike. Bikes are available for free hire from the central tourist agency.

» Basilica di San Vitale, one of the wonders Western Byzantium, was built by Pope Excelsius and consecrated by Bishop Massimiliano in 548. The mosaics on the walls are spectacular.
» Basilica di S. Apollinare Nuovo was built by Teodorico at the beginning of the sixth century.
» Mausoleo di Teodorico built by the king himself has a monolithic dome of Istrian stone.
» Mausoleo di Galla Placidia: the Mausoleum is dedicated to Galla Placidia. She was the daughter of the Eastern Emperor Teodosio and the sister of Western Emperor Onorio. Within the Mausoleum are the most ancient wall mosaics in Ravenna.
» Battistero Neoniano
» Basilica di S. Apollinare in Classe magnificent for its architecture and mosaics. It is situated in Classe, 4 km from Ravenna.
» Abbazia di Pomposa can be reached along the 309 Romea state road. This abbey is a true masterpiece of Romanesque and Byzantine art.

COMACCHIO

Following the Romea state road, you can reach the town of Comacchio, the so-called Little Venice. Its streets, bridges, canals and houses give it the appearance of a true lagoon town.

FERRARA

A renaissance town of uncertain origin, Ferrara’s urban structure dates back to the 15TH century when it was ruled by the Este family. Biagio Rosetti’ s town plan made it the fist modern town in Europe, this is the main reason why the town is designated as a world heritage site.
