Ravenna

City of Art and History

Ravenna is a first class city of art, history and culture, a city of ancient origin with a glorious past, three times capital city: of the Western Roman Empire, during the reign of Theodoric king of the Goths and of the Byzantine Empire in Europe.

Amongst its ancient walls the world’s greatest mosaic heritage is to be found dating back to the 5th and 6th century, the magnificence of that period of time has left in Ravenna a vast heritage of monuments.

No less than 8 buildings have been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the San Vitale Basilica, The Sant’Apollinare Nuovo Basilica, the Mausoleum of Theodoric, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, the Baptistry of Neon, the Arian Baptistry, the Archiepiscopal Chapel, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe.

Ravenna is full of cultural eventsmuseums (the Art Museum, the National Museum, the Dante’s Museum, the Archiepiscopal Museum, the Italian Unification Museum) internationaly recognised happenings that project the city into the future.

The Ravenna Festival is one of Europe’s biggest events because of its wide range of musical and theatrical performances.

The beaches of Ravenna harmoniously situated between the golden sand, the green of the woods and the valleys, charme the tourists with hospitality. The efficient and dinamic organisation of the balneal services allows to choose between a relaxing holiday in the sun or one filled with activities, sports and fitness on the beach.

Those who get to know Ravenna fall in love with it today just like it happened in the past to the author and poet Boccaccio, who set in Ravenna one of his most beautiful novels, to Gustav Klimt, to Herman Hesse who dedicated to Ravenna some of his verses. Ravenna was Dante’s last shelter and theater of Lord Byron’s loves.
